Miss Sara Crewe, once the most admired pupil at Miss Minchin’s Select Seminary, was a child much accustomed to comfort. It is, perhaps, all the more striking then, how swiftly fortune may turn; for with the loss of her father comes the loss of all she possessed. Reduced to an attic room and a life of service, she finds herself where kindness is scarce and seldom offered. And yet, there are some qualities which circumstance cannot quite undo. For even when the world insists upon appearances, Sara holds fast to the quiet certainty of her own dignity.
