It is chaotic. It is crowded. It is miles of towering shelves, endless corridors of stories, and an absolute paradise for book lovers.

The 54th New Delhi World Book Fair (NDWBF) returns from 16–24 January 2027 at Bharat Mandapam (Pragati Maidan), New Delhi, welcoming visitors daily from 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM. Organised by the National Book Trust (NBT), India, it is one of the world’s largest literary celebrations, bringing together readers, authors, publishers, translators, educators, and storytellers under one roof.
If previous editions are anything to go by, this year’s fair promises to be another spectacular celebration of books. The 2026 edition welcomed over two million visitors and featured more than 1,000 publishers from over 35 countries, reaffirming India’s enduring love for the written word. Whether you’re hunting for a rare edition, exploring international pavilions, meeting your favourite author, or simply wandering in search of your next great read, the World Book Fair is an experience unlike any other.
The Magic of the Pavilions
Walking into the exhibition halls feels less like entering a convention centre and more like exploring a living city made of paper.

Children’s zones buzz with storytelling sessions and creative workshops while international pavilions showcase literature, languages, and cultures from across the globe. Every aisle is alive with students, families, collectors, academics, and lifelong readers browsing shelves stacked with everything from bestselling fiction and academic texts to independent publications, translated works, and hidden literary gems.
One of the fair’s greatest strengths is that it places international publishing giants shoulder-to-shoulder with regional and independent presses. For a few days, the hierarchy created by online algorithms disappears. A reader can wander from a global publishing house to a tiny stall run by an independent poet or translator without ever leaving the same hall.
That is where the real magic lies. Discovery becomes accidental again. Instead of being told what to read based on past clicks and recommendations, you stumble upon books you never knew existed and authors you may never have encountered online.
A Book Lover’s Fair Survival Guide
A fair this size rewards a little planning. Before setting off on your own literary pilgrimage, keep these essentials in mind:
- Wear comfortable shoes. You’ll easily cross your daily step goal walking between the exhibition halls.
- Carry a sturdy backpack. It distributes the weight of your book haul far better than a tote bag.
- Arrive early. The morning hours are quieter and make browsing much more enjoyable.
- Bring a water bottle. Staying hydrated is essential when you’re spending an entire day on your feet.

Spotting the Trends
Beyond the excitement, the World Book Fair offers a fascinating snapshot of what people are actually reading. Despite frequent predictions about the “death of print,” attendance continues to grow year after year. The fair has become a powerful reminder that reading culture in India is thriving rather than fading.
Publishers consistently report that fiction remains the strongest-selling category, while self-help, personal development, health, and history continue to attract large audiences. There is also increasing enthusiasm for books by Indian authors, reflecting growing support for homegrown voices alongside international bestsellers.
Readers are becoming more selective and value-conscious as well. Students often flock to discounted and remaindered books, proving that affordability influences purchasing decisions without reducing enthusiasm for reading.
Perhaps the biggest shift, however, is that visitors no longer come only to buy books. Author talks, literary forums, workshops, and panel discussions routinely attract packed audiences, showing that readers increasingly seek experiences that deepen their connection with literature.
Beyond the Books
A world-class book fair is about much more than shopping bags filled with new reads.
Throughout the event, platforms such as Lekhak Manch and the Author’s Corner host discussions, book launches, interviews, and literary forums that transform the venue into a giant cultural conversation. These sessions offer something no online retailer can replicate: direct access to the people behind the books.

Instead of reading a short author biography, you hear writers speak about their inspirations, research, creative struggles, and unexpected journeys to publication. A debut novelist can share the stage with an established historian, while readers leave with not only signed copies but also a deeper appreciation of the stories behind them.
A Triumph for the Printed Page
Every few years, headlines declare that print is dying. Yet walking through the World Book Fair tells an entirely different story.
Seeing millions of readers queue to browse shelves, attend literary discussions, and carry home stacks of physical books shatters the myth that the page has been replaced by the screen. Technology may have changed how we discover books, but it has not diminished our desire to hold them, collect them, or share them.
For a few days each year, the World Book Fair reminds us that books are far more than products. They are conversations, communities, and connections waiting to be discovered. And for anyone who has ever felt at home in a library or lost track of time in a bookshop, it remains the closest thing to paradise.
